Landscape Near Oschwand

Rolling fields climb toward Oschwand in this landscape by Cuno Amiet, the Swiss painter who made the Bernese countryside his lifelong subject. Amiel builds the scene from thick, broken strokes: meadow green and hay gold in the foreground, a farmhouse roof pitched at an angle, hills beyond dissolving into violet and powder blue. Every patch of color carries the drag of the brush. A quiet study, a hallway above the stairs, or a reading corner with a north window would suit its rural calm.
