Landscape near Calvine

Birch trunks climb through the middle distance at Calvine, their pale bark cut against shadowed green. Peploe paints the Perthshire hillside in loaded strokes, each dab of pigment doing the work of a dozen leaves. Sunlight lands on the clearing and stays there. Browns and moss greens anchor the lower slope while dabs of ochre and cream flicker through the canopy. The brushwork is brisk, almost stitching, laying forest and sky side by side without soft edges. Hills behind hold a cooler blue, pushing the woodland forward. A study or reading nook with plain timber furniture would let this Scottish woodland breathe.
