Field after field climbs toward Auxerre, hedgerows cutting the slopes into a quilt of green and tawny gold. Gustave Loiseau set this Burgundian view down in oil, dragging short brushstrokes across the surface until sky and pasture seem to breathe together. Look closely and the paint does the farming: thick impasto ridges trace plow lines, a pale road zigzags uphill, scattered farm roofs sit in dabs of brick red. Cloud shadow slides over one hillside while the next holds full sun. It suits a dining room or a study with a wide desk, anywhere a long view rewards a long look.
