Landscape

Smoke rises first. A thin grey plume drifts from a distant factory or burning ridge, and everything beneath it settles into a hush of violet ash and cold steel blue. Konstantin Bogaevsky titled the work simply Landscape, and the plainness is the point. Look closer and the terrain turns strange. Rocky plateaus stack toward the horizon in stages, each one paler and more mineral than the last, the way Crimea looks at dusk. Brushwork in the foreground is dry and scumbled, ochre dragged over grey, while the sky above holds a bruised, luminous haze that seems lit from somewhere behind the mountains. A dim study or a hallway painted in deep tones gives this scene the shadow it wants. Hang it where evening light falls and the smoke will seem to move.
