Landscape in Transylvania

Low hills fold into one another under a heavy peasant sky, the kind Istvan Nagy returned to again and again in his Landscape in Transylvania. Painted in thick, earthen strokes, the terrain carries the weight of real soil: ochre fields, a bruised green treeline, homestead roofs sunk small into the valley floor. Nagy built his forms with a loaded brush, letting impasto ridges catch light the way plowed furrows do, every color pulled from mud, straw, and rain. This rural Hungarian vista belongs in a study or hallway where quiet, grounded imagery can hold the room.
