Landscape in the Evening. Martyshkino

Dusk settles over Martyshkino in this Konstantin Somov landscape, the last of the daylight pooling in violet and rose above the water. The sky does most of the work here: bands of lilac, salmon, and slate grey dissolve toward a horizon where the sea sits almost black. Thin tree silhouettes lean along the shore, their branches drawn in quick dark strokes, and low rooftops catch a final ember of orange. Somov brushes the reflections into long soft streaks on the water, each one slightly smeared, as if the surface itself were breathing out the day. A quiet study or bedroom corner suits this seascape best, somewhere the slow fading light can be watched at length.
