Bare trees file along a white lane while low winter light pulls violet tones across the fields, the opening scene of Landscape in Snow by Gustave Loiseau. Loiseau built the surface in small cross-hatched strokes of oil, a trellis of paint that lets greys and creams shimmer like frost. Slate roofs catch a rust-orange glint. A stone wall runs pinkish through the drifts, and every shadow reads blue against the snow. In a quiet study or a north-lit reading nook, it cools a warm room the way January cools a village, softly and without apology.
