Landscape in Snow

A rutted lane runs white between bare hedgerows in Landscape in Snow, where Gustave Loiseau presses cold violet shadow into every drift and lets pale winter light sit on the crust. Loiseau built his snowfields from short, parallel touches, and the texture shows: zinc-grey sky scumbled thin, ochre stubble breaking through where the plough turned, a low farmhouse with one chimney drawing thin smoke. The blues in the shadowed ground carry the whole chill. Set in a study or hallway where morning light falls, the scene carries the hush of a French countryside morning, frost-bright and slow, blue pooling in the far distance.
