Landscape in Autumn

A field gone copper and rust, split by a pale road that narrows toward a cluster of bare trunks. Gustave Loiseau builds Landscape in Autumn from small, dense strokes of oil color, each touch of ochre and olive left visible. Look closely and the trees hold more than brown. Dabs of green gold and muted violet flicker through the canopy, while the sky above stays a cool pearl grey. Loiseau, a painter of the post impressionist circle, lets the brushwork do the describing: short dashes, crosshatched foliage, a horizon kept low and quiet. A reading nook or study with linen and worn oak suits this autumnal mood well.
