Landscape in a Valley

Green slopes fall away to water, hedgerows stitched along the descent. Gustave Loiseau painted Landscape in a Valley out in the open air, oil worked into short crosshatched strokes. Up close the lattice shows: violet shadow and pale blue crossed over sage until the hillside trembles. Poplars stand in single file through the middle distance. A farmhouse roof sits low, half swallowed by meadow, while cloud light drifts across the current. A study, a stair landing, a reading nook with worn oak. Rooms where mornings move slowly let the quiet of the French countryside settle.
