Landscape

Fields roll toward a low horizon in this landscape by Giacomo Balla, the Italian Futurist who could make even quiet countryside feel like it was moving. Trees and slopes bend with the wind that runs through the whole picture. Light comes in strokes rather than washes. Grass reads as flickering green and ochre dashes, the sky built from layered bands of pale blue and cream, everything arranged so the eye keeps circling instead of resting. Brushwork carries the motion. It suits a sunlit reading nook or a hallway where natural light changes through the day and keeps the surface alive.
