Landscape

A lane of pollarded trees runs out of shadow and into pale afternoon light, hedgerows rising dark on either side. Landscape by George Hyde Pownall turns a quiet stretch of English countryside into the whole subject. Pownall worked in oil, and the surface shows it: creamy highlights laid over cool green underpainting, thin sky washed in at the horizon, trunks picked out in quick grey strokes. Cloud shadow drifts across a middle field while the foreground stays warm, the path itself catching the last of the sun. Nothing grand happens here, and that is the point, an unhurried view recorded by a painter who knew London streets but kept returning to rural air. It suits a study or reading room, somewhere with low lamplight and a window onto garden.
