Landscape at Sunset

Sunset pours across the fields in Umberto Veruda Landscape at sunset, the last light caught low over water and treeline. Veruda, a Trieste painter of the late nineteenth century, built his reputation on exactly this kind of air and open sky, plein air studies where weather does the painting. Here the sky dominates, bands of apricot and rose dissolving into violet above a darkened horizon, the land itself reduced to quiet silhouettes. Brushwork stays loose and atmospheric, haze softening every edge. Warm amber and dusk violet color the whole surface. A calm, glowing presence in a bedroom or sitting room, lovely above a low console or in a reading corner where evening light suits it.
