Landscape at Sunset

A low sun flattens itself against the horizon, a pale disc swallowed by bands of orange and deep blue. Felix Vallotton builds Landscape at Sunset from broad, unmodulated planes of color, each field of sky and hillside laid down flat and hard-edged. The trees read as dark silhouettes without a single highlight, their shapes cut clean against the glowing band behind them. Below, the ground holds in shadowed greens and browns while the sky above burns in layered tones of amber, rose, and slate. Nothing blends; every edge stays deliberate. This suits a dining room or a hallway where light shifts through the day, echoing the fading warmth the canvas holds.
