Landscape at Le Cannet

Terraced slopes rise behind the houses at Le Cannet, their gardens stacked in greens that shift from deep pine to yellowed olive. Pierre Bonnard paints this hillside above Cannes as a patchwork of sun-struck color, every tree and wall given its own temperature of light. Look closely and the brushwork loosens into dabs of vermilion, chrome yellow, and violet shadow. Roofs burn orange against cypress darks. The sky holds only a thin band of blue before the foliage takes over, and the whole composition tilts gently toward the Mediterranean glare. A sunlit reading room, a stairwell landing, or a breakfast space with morning light would carry this landscape well.
