Landscape at Cassis

Cassis bakes under full Provençal light, the little harbour town rendered by Samuel Peploe in blocks of sunlit colour. Rooftops cluster along the hillside above water that sits almost solid, a swathe of unbroken blue pressed flat against the coast. Pine and cypress hold the slopes in dark green strokes. Stone walls, terracotta roofs and pale rock face are set down thick and deliberate, each plane given its own temperature: ochre against violet shadow, chalk white against a sea pushed toward ultramarine. The brushwork is brisk, the drawing firm, the whole composition balanced on that hard southern light. Strong colour like this suits a kitchen, a stairwell or any sunlit room that can carry a Mediterranean palette without apology.
