Landscape. A field

Ripening grain floods the picture plane, stalks bent by wind and built up in loaded, directional strokes. The Russian painter Pyotr Konchalovsky titled the scene plainly: Landscape. A field. Oil paint sits thick on the surface, ochre dragged across sap green so the ground itself seems to move. The horizon runs low: a thin treeline, a pale sky, grey cloud shadow cooling the gold in slow patches. Foreground strokes turn nearly horizontal, combed in long passes across the wheat. Hang it where the light shifts through the day, a dining room, a stair landing, anywhere that wants an open horizon at eye level.
