Lamayuru Monastery

A whitewashed gompa clings to barren rock in Ladakh, painted by Nicholas Roerich under his title Lamayuru Monastery. Cube-shaped dwellings stack toward prayer halls on the ridge. Ochre cliffs and cobalt snow peaks frame the Tibetan sanctuary. Chortens and figures with pack animals thread the valley floor below. Deep ultramarine sky presses down on the terraced roofs, crosshatched in fine tempera strokes. Perfect above a study desk or reading nook with low warm light.
