Lakeland Scene near Breccles

Still water holds a broad Norfolk sky in Lakeland Scene near Breccles, Winston Churchill painting the quiet Breckland lake country where pinewoods crowd down to the shore. Oil paint sits thickly along the treeline, each pine a stacked dab of viridian and umber, while the water below takes the colour in long horizontal strokes of grey, slate and pale gold. Reeds break the mirror at the near bank, and the far shore dissolves into humid light. A panelled study suits it best, somewhere with leather chairs and low lamplight, where the cool greens of that lowland water read as a window left open.
