Lake Yam-tso

A high Tibetan lake fills the lower half of Lake Yam-tso, its surface a sheet of deep ultramarine broken only by pale reflections. Nicholas Roerich paints the water as a slab of solid color, hard-edged and luminous against the shore. Mountains crowd the far bank. Their slopes carry snow in thick, dry strokes of white and violet, the tempera dragged across so the ridgelines seem carved rather than brushed. The sky above holds a cold clarity, muted teal shading to slate near the peaks, and not a single human figure disturbs the silence. Roerich knew these waters from his Central Asian expeditions, and the composition carries that first-hand weight. It suits a quiet study or a hallway that needs a window onto high altitude.
