Lake Sheshnag

A high alpine lake holds still water between mountain walls. Lake Sheshnag, painted by Nicholas Roerich, gathers pilgrim legend and Himalayan grandeur into one quiet basin of reflected peaks. Roerich lays in the water in deep blues and cold greens, edged by ochre scree slopes and ridgelines where snow lingers in long bands. Thin clouds press close to the summits. The brushwork is broad and confident, every rock face built from layered strokes of ultramarine, violet and bone white, while the lake surface catches the sky in a narrower, darker register. A study, a quiet hallway, or a reading room with low light suits this mood: contemplative, high-altitude, and strangely still.
