Lake of the Nagas

Still water fills the lower half of Lake of the Nagas, painted by Nicholas Roerich in his signature tempera veil. The surface lies flat and opaque, a pane of turquoise holding the mountains above it. Blue peaks crowd the horizon in layered ranges, each ridge a cooler shade than the one before. Coiled serpent forms, the nagas of Buddhist legend, hover beneath the waterline, their bodies suggested in strokes of deeper green. Snow caps catch the last light. The sky burns pale gold at the rim. Suited to a quiet study or a hallway where the eye needs somewhere to rest.
