Lake near Breccles in Autumn

Autumn leans over a still lake near Breccles, copper and russet foliage crowding the bank while the water holds every reflected tree in place. Winston Churchill worked it in thick, decisive oil strokes. Buttery impasto rides along the shoreline, each leaf mass built from ochre, burnt sienna and olive dragged side to side. Below, everything sits glassy and inverted, broken only by a pale sky reflection and the dark verticals of bare trunks at the far edge. A wood-paneled study suits it, or a reading nook where lamplight catches the ridges of paint and the copper notes answer old leather spines.
