Lake Ladoga Islands

Bare islands rise out of cold water in Lake Ladoga Islands by Nicholas Roerich, a scene where rock and grey sky meet at a low horizon. Slate-blue water fills most of the field, broken by long ridges of wet granite that hold a pale sheen. Broad tempera washes in silver and grey-green build the surface, while a thin band of light slides beneath the cloud base. It suits a quiet study or library corner, where the cool palette calms a room and pairs well with plain wood and linen.
