Lake in the Mountains

A still alpine lake rests between steep slopes, its surface a sheet of pale silver under a deep Himalayan sky. Nicholas Roerich paints the scene in Lake in the Mountains with his signature tempera clarity, every ridge carved in flat planes of color. Cobalt and violet mountains rise in layered bands, their edges cooled by shadow. The water holds the light of the peaks without a ripple.
