Lake Hyumpola

A high-altitude lake fills the foreground of Lake Hyumpola, its surface catching the cold light that Nicholas Roerich loved to paint across the Himalayan range. The water reads almost as solid as stone. Behind it, mountains rise in layers of cobalt and violet, their snowfields dissolving into a pale sky. Roerich built such landscapes in tempera, laying color in broad, level bands so the terrain seems carved rather than painted. Thin shorelines and dark slopes anchor the still water, and nothing in the scene moves. A study or quiet hallway suits it well, anywhere that rewards long, calm looking at high mountain air.
