Lake Garda

Blue water stretches flat as enamel toward the mountains, and the shoreline of Lake Garda arrives in bands of rock, cypress green, and haze. Koloman Moser reduces the scene to quiet, deliberate shapes. Slopes descend in stepped planes of olive and dusty rose, their edges drawn clean against the sky. Small sails drift across the surface like paper cutouts. The palette holds to slate, cream, and warm ochre, flattened in the manner of Viennese Secession design. It belongs in a study or an entryway, somewhere morning light can pick out those layered hillsides and carry a little of the shore indoors.
