Lahaul

The Lahaul valley spreads beneath its snowline in this Nicholas Roerich mountain scene, where high desert ridges meet the first white summits of the Himalaya. Cold blue shadow pools in the hollows while sunlit slopes carry pale ochre and bone-white passes. Roerich lays his tempera in flat, confident bands, letting the ridge lines sharpen like blades against a sky of deep enamel blue. Small dark forms, stone shelters or hardy trees, dot the middle distance and give the vastness its scale. A study, hallway, or quiet reading room gives this austere high-altitude silence the wall it deserves.
