Lahaul

High valley light floods across Lahaul, the subject Nicholas Roerich painted from the cold edge of the western Himalaya. Slopes of raw sienna and violet descend toward a narrow valley floor, distant ridges pale against a deep cobalt sky. Shadow runs blue over the near hills, snow along the upper crests reads as unbroken white bands. The paint sits flat and unblended, tempera clarity giving every contour a hard, carved edge, the whole composition compressed into layered horizontal planes.
