Ladoga

The great lake fills the frame, water lying like poured pewter beneath a low Russian sky. Ladoga is Roerich at his most restrained, the shore reduced to a dark ribbon of granite at the bottom edge. Look at how the water is built up in flat, overlapping planes of slate blue and cold silver, brushwork broad and unhesitating. The sky above holds a narrow seam of pale light where cloud meets horizon, and the whole surface carries the matte chalkiness of tempera on panel. It belongs in a study or a hallway facing north light, where its silence can hold the room.
