Ladakh

Brown mountainside rises tier upon tier toward a Ladakhi village, its flat rooftops and white chortens catching hard Himalayan sun. Nicholas Roerich named this canvas simply Ladakh, and the title says everything the eye confirms. Tempera carries the color here: burnt sienna and ochre slopes built up in dry, grainy layers, then a sky of deep lapis blue pressed flat above the ridgeline. Tiny white shrines punctuate the barren rock, and the crosshatched brushwork gives every cliff a mineral, wind-scoured texture. Nothing softens. The altitude does the composing. A study, a stairwell, any room with strong daylight suits this stark high-desert scene.
