Ladakh

A whitewashed monastery crowns the ridge above Ladakh, its cubic block set against slopes the color of raw sienna. Nicholas Roerich builds the scene from flat planes of tempera, each terrace and rooftop edged with a hard, sure line. Below the walls, ochre fields step down toward the valley floor. Behind everything rise the Himalayas, their ridgework compressed into bands of cobalt and violet, the peaks cool even where the sunlight lands. Shadow pools in the hollows like poured ink, and the air between mountain and village reads thin, dry, high. Roerich painted these trans-Himalayan journeys with a mystic economy that suits a quiet study or a hallway where light falls from one side. Ladakh rewards a long look and a tall, narrow space.
