Ladakh

Ladakh unfolds below: flat rooftops, white chortens, and terraced fields pressed against a wall of Himalayan rock. Nicholas Roerich set the settlement low so the mountains could dominate every inch of sky. The palette runs from burnt sienna slopes to a single band of glacial blue at the top. Small white buildings read like scattered bone against the ochre ground, each one held in place by tight, dry brushwork. A slender path winds uphill toward the pass, drawing the eye into the thin cold air of the trans-Himalaya. Suited to a study or a hallway where quiet, vertical distance gives the eye somewhere to travel.
