Ladakh. Leh.

Flat rooftops of Leh cluster beneath a wall of Himalayan rock, painted by Nicholas Roerich during his Central Asian travels. Ladakh. Leh. records the old town as a low heap of ochre cubes gathered at the foot of a looming ridgeline. Every surface is built from layered tempera planes: sun-bleached walls in sand and dusty rose, tiny window slits, and above them the barren mountain rendered in sweeping strokes of violet, slate and bone white. A pale sky presses down, cold and thin, the air of high altitude made visible in pigment. Suits a study or hallway where mountain subjects and travel memories belong.
