A dust-colored mountain wall rises over the valley, painted in the strong sunlight of Ladakh. Nicholas Roerich gave the Himalayas their truest portrait, and this scene shows why. The peaks flatten into broad planes of ochre, violet shadow and cold blue sky, laid down in broad, unblended fields of tempera-like color. Below, a narrow track crosses barren scree toward a scatter of white chortens, their dome shapes small against the enormous mass of rock. Every ridge is simplified, monumental, almost geological in its weight. Hang it in a study or reading room where the cold high-altitude light can carry across a quiet wall.
