La Jolla Beach

Surf breaks in long white seams along the sandstone bluffs of La Jolla Beach, a Pacific shore Guy Rose rendered with the broken color and plein air freshness of California impressionism. Wet sand holds a mirror of violet and pearl, while the sea shifts from pale turquoise near the shallows to deep cobalt at the horizon. Short, loaded strokes of oil pigment let sky, rock and water shimmer without hard edges. A sunroom or a stair landing suits the salt bright palette, where afternoon light keeps the tide in motion and the air in the room turns faintly marine.
