Kuntsevo. Yellow Cottage

A yellow cottage fronts the summer light at Kuntsevo, plank walls slathered with ochre straight from the tube. Pyotr Konchalovsky treats the dacha like architecture worth a portrait. White window frames punch through the yellow field, each sash dragged in with a few decisive strokes. Greens stack behind the roofline, from olive shadow to sap green tree crowns, while grass in the yard carries ridges of impasto you can almost count. The brushwork follows the boards. A sunroom, stair landing, or country kitchen with worn pine suits it best; sunbaked color against bare plaster and pale wood does the rest.
