About this work

Kuluta

Terraced hillsides of the Kullu valley roll toward a wall of Himalayan peaks, painted under a sky of deep ultramarine. Kuluta belongs to Nicholas Roerich, whose Himalayan expedition works turned these slopes into near-sacred ground. The valley floor glows in ochre and green tempera, small hamlets and pine folds caught in crisp edges. Beyond them the snow ridges flatten into planes of white and violet, their geometry more carved than rendered. Cold air seems built into the pigment itself. A study or hallway with pale walls and wood furniture gives the cool palette room to breathe.
