Kulu Valley

Terraced hillsides step down through deodar forest toward the floor of the Kulu valley, the western Himalayan landscape Nicholas Roerich painted during his years in the mountains of Himachal Pradesh. Layered tempera builds the distance: near ridges in deep pine green, far summits dissolving into that cold ultramarine the painter reserved for thin mountain air. Slate roofs of a hill village catch pale light between the fields, and a narrow track threads upward toward the snowline. Made for a study or a quiet reading room, where the cool greens and high blue hold the calm of an evening above the Beas river.
