Kremlin Tower in Novgorod

A fortress tower of Novgorod rises above its earthen rampart, painted by Nicholas Roerich in his characteristic tempera manner. The Kremlin tower dominates the composition, its weathered masonry softened under a pale northern sky. Roerich builds the surface in broad, deliberate strokes: cool grey stone against deep green turf, the dark vertical of the tower set against a horizon of low hills and scattered roofs. Shadows fall in muted violet, and the sky holds that faint pearl light specific to overcast days in old Russian towns. The composition suits a study or library wall, where its quiet geometry and restrained palette reward long looking.
