Kovno. Castle of Crusaders

Stone towers of the crusader castle rise over Kovno, their pale masonry stacked against a moody sky. Nicholas Roerich renders the fortress as a compact mass of wall and roofline, deliberately monumental. Gloomy greens and slate blues wash the ramparts, while small roofs and smoke-thin details cluster at the base for scale. The brushwork is brisk, almost geological, treating the stronghold like bedrock pushed up through the town. Water below carries the same cold reflection. A fortress subject like this anchors a study, hallway, or library with weight and northern atmosphere.
