Kostroma. Belfry of Ipatievsky Monastery

A tiered belfry rises above Kostroma in this view of the Ipatievsky monastery, painted by Nicholas Roerich. Domes and bell openings catch the light against a broad northern sky. Slender tent towers and drum domes cluster along the wall line, their silvery roofing set down in firm, decisive strokes. Below, the monastery enclosure runs in weathered grey masonry, while the river and meadow flats open out in cool greens and pale blues. Cloud banks press softly overhead, weightless against the heavy architecture. Suited to a study or a hallway with a northern window, where the cool palette can hold its own.
