Koscioly wilenskie

Towers and spires of the Vilnius churches rise against a heavy northern sky, painted by Ferdynand Ruszczyc in a work titled Koscioly wilenskie. The city appears as silhouette and stone. Baroque domes crowd the skyline, their cupolas and crosses picked out in deep umber, slate and a cold leaden grey. Ruszczyc loads the paint thickly, so roofs and bell towers carry real weight, while the sky behind them churns in broad, wet strokes of charcoal and greyed green. A study, a hallway or a reading nook gains a serious, northern gravity from this image of old Vilnius.
