Copper pans hang in a tiered gleam against a dim plaster wall, the whole arrangement of a working French kitchen caught by Maurice Louis Monnot in Kitchen Interior. A tiled hearth anchors the back of the room, its glazed squares catching firelight in muted blues and browns. A long wooden table carries a scattering of onions, a jug, a cloth thrown over the edge. Brushwork stays loose where shadow pools, tighter along the rims of the brass and the curve of a ladle, so the metal reads as metal. Everything in the scene has been used, and recently.
