Kiss the Earth

Bent figures press their hands and brows toward dark tilled soil, a ritual of gratitude rendered in the earthy register that Nicholas Roerich favored for scenes of peasant devotion to the land. Blues deepen across the sky while the field itself carries the weight of umber, ochre, and shadowed green, the furrows drawn in broad, sure strokes. Bodies and ground seem made of the same clay, so close is the contact between the bowing workers and the yielding earth they honor.
