Kirkcudbright, Street Corner

Sunlight rakes across the gable end of a Kirkcudbright corner house. Samuel Peploe catches the moment where two streets meet and the sky opens beyond the rooftops. Whitewashed walls carry the full weight of the light. Shadow cuts hard across the lower facade, laid on in broad, loaded strokes of slate and violet grey. A sliver of red hangs at a window, a door stands dark against the plaster, and the cobbles below run warm ochre into cool reflected blue. Brushwork stays loose and squared off, the structure held by colour rather than line. It belongs in a stairwell or a hallway with plain walls, where the strong diagonal of the buildings can carry the eye upward through the space.
