Kirkcudbright

Rooftops and gable ends climb a Scottish hillside in Kirkcudbright, Samuel Peploe catching the town in stacked blocks of slate grey, cream and sunlit pink. Chimneys punctuate the sky. The brushwork is brisk and loaded, each rooftop a single decisive stroke, the street below dissolving into cool green shadow. Dumfries light, painted without sentiment. Whitewashed walls glow against leaden cloud, and a wedge of yellow ochre warms one facade where the sun has briefly broken through. The palette is restrained, almost Dutch, until that single warm note tips the whole composition toward colour. Suits a stairwell or a study with north light, where the grey and cream can hold their own against quieter walls.
