Kirkcudbright

Rooftops and gabled houses of a Scottish harbour town gather under a thick grey sky in Kirkcudbright, a Scottish Colourist view by Samuel Peploe. The buildings climb the canvas in slabs of cream, ochre and muted red, their rooftops cut into confident planes. Green shutters and dark windows punctuate the facades, while the paint sits thick and unblended, brushstrokes laid side by side like cobbles. A narrow street slips between the houses toward a hint of water and distant hills, all held together by cool light and firm drawing. Suited to a hallway or a study desk corner where a touch of Scotland can sit quietly.
