Kirkcudbright

Rooftops of a Scottish harbour town step downhill toward the water in Kirkcudbright. Samuel Peploe builds the scene from clean planes of colour, each roof and wall given its own unblended patch of paint. The composition reads almost like a mosaic, small rectangles locking together across the slope. Greys and slaty blues carry the townscape, cut by warm brick red and a slice of cream where sunlight catches a gable. Chimneys punctuate the skyline. Below, the harbour sits quiet, its water handled in a few decisive strokes. Brushwork stays visible everywhere, firm and unhurried, the touch of a painter working directly in front of his subject. A study, a hallway, or a reading nook with pale walls gives these cool tones room to breathe.
