Kirkcudbright Castle, Reflections

Kirkcudbright Castle sits doubled in still water, its grey stone walls and rounded towers mirrored below the tree line. Samuel Peploe renders the Scottish stronghold as pure arrangement of light and hue. Peploe builds the water from broad horizontal strokes of sage, slate and cream, breaking the reflection into trembling bands. Sky presses pale against the ramparts, and the foliage reads as deliberate blocks of bottle green and ochre, the whole scene balanced with the precision he brought to every canvas. Suited to a hallway or a study with tall windows, where the cool greens of the riverbank carry through the day.
